The Competitive Manufacturing Initiative (CMI) was a collaborative response from Australia’s Manufacturing Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs) to assist manufacturing industry improve manufacturing practice through the development of innovative vocational education and training (VET) qualifications and units of competency.

The CMI Training Package covers all of the manufacturing industry. At the 2001 census, the manufacturing industry employed 1,010,179 persons or 12% of the entire workforce.
