Opportunities with Online Training
Written by gavin.howard

Do you deliver online training? To be a success you need to ensure the following:

  • Your software is easy to use.
  • The option of supplying hard copy materials
  • Provide a range of modular pricing and service options

The profile of the online learner is changing and to meet their needs the training provider needs to understand:
1. Students are older
2. An increasing number of students are completing individual modules as opposed to the full qualification,
3. The purchase of online training tends to be on an as needed basis.

For example the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. A majority of trainers now are required to upgrade their previous BSZ qualifcation to the new TAA40104. In fact I am aware of a TAFE college that has requested all their teachers to upgrade for the 2008 year. This has lead to a frantic search for providers of this qualification in addition to the option for seeking Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for individual modules.

The opportunity here for Registered Training Companies is to provide the RPL process for the TAA qualification. This appears to still be somewhat of a challenge However the online recognition of current competencies would fast-track the completion of qualifications and provide an introduction to online training that results in good immediate outcomes, thus establishing a larger customer base with a positive online experience.

Group learning and using study groups provide a more interactive online experience and as we know Adults learn as much from each other (sometime more) as the learning content. This online option is untapped and can provide vast marketing potentials.

Employers and individual learner groups-identified as career changers, skill improvers and self-employed-want online training in short, simple, immediately available and easy-to-manage chunks. These chunks (or micro-segments) may be as short as one hour in duration, adapted to individual needs and should articulate into accredited modules and courses.

Finally- If you deliver online training I am sure you realise that even if you have the best quality training resources available- from the customers view it is all about the experience the service experience they receive including before, during and after the training takes place.
